The Haddonfield Police Detective Bureau is responsible for handling firearms applications and firearms investigations.

Rifles & Shotguns
Residents age 18 or older can apply for a New Jersey Firearms ID Card. This allows the bearer to purchase shotguns and rifles in the State of New Jersey and allows them to transport those weapons to and from gun ranges following the guidelines in NJS 2C:39-6g. (http://www.nj.gov/njsp/about/fire_hollow.html) To apply, you must be:

  • 18 years old or older
  • be of good character in the community in which you live
  • never been convicted of a crime or disorderly persons offense involving an act of domestic violence
  • not be dependant on drugs/alcohol
  • not be confined for a mental disorder
  • not suffer from a physical defect or disease which would make it unsafe to handle a firearm
  • not be subject to a domestic violence restraining order
  • no criminal record as adult or juvenile involving unlawful use or possession of a weapon

To apply, download the form from the link below or pick up an application (STS-33) from your local police department. Fill out the form, sign and date it. You will also need to fill out the mental health release form (SP-66). Get a money order, made out to the New Jersey State Police SBI Unit in the amount of $60.25. Personal checks, certified checks will not be accepted. Call and make an appointment with the detective sergeant. He will review the forms to make sure they are complete, answer any questions you may have, collect the payment, and fingerprint you. From this point it typically takes 6-8 weeks to complete the background investigation on the resident and to issue the card. The Chief of Police determines if the card should be issued, based on NJS 2C:58-3c. Once the card is issued, there is a $5.00 fee collected from the person (cash, check, money order)

If you need to change your address, your name or replace a lost Firearms ID Card, there is a different application (STS-3). You can download the form from the link below or pick one up at the police department. Fill out the form along with the mental health release form (SP-66) and a criminal history release form (SBI-212A). Get a money order, made out to the New Jersey State Police SBI Unit in the amount of $18.00. Personal checks, certified checks will not be accepted. Call and make an appointment with the Detective Sergeant.

HANDGUNS
Residents may also apply for a handgun permit in addition to the Firearms ID card. A handgun permit is needed for each and every handgun purchased. While the firearms ID card does not expire, the handgun permit is only good for 90 days. You may apply for the handgun permit at the time you apply for the Firearms ID Card or you may apply for a handgun permit at any time after you receive your Firearms ID card. The same application ((STS-33) is used for both. You must be age 21 or older to receive a handgun permit. There is a $2.00 fee collected for each handgun permit once they are issued.

Forms and additional information can be viewed and downloaded at:

REMEMBER: NJS 2C:58-15 makes it illegal to leave a loaded firearm accessible to a minor.
