HEALTHY LAWNS MEAN HEALTHY WATER – BOROUGH OF HADDONFIELD ORDINANCE TO REINFORCE STATE REGULATIONS FOR LAWN FERTILIZER APPLICATIONS
Borough offers Tips to Residents on Proper Fertilizer Use and Keeping Lawns and Surface Water Healthy

The Borough of Haddonfield recently introduced an ordinance to regulate outdoor fertilizer applications during a February 28 regular meeting. The ordinance is set to be passed at the next Board of Commissioners meeting on March 13.

The proposed ordinance, which reinforces a new state law, restricts the use of fertilizers for residents from November 15 to March 1, and for professionals from December 1 through March 1. The Commissioners introduced the ordinance due to the overuse of and excess nutrients in fertilizers that are damaging waterways and aquatic life.

The proper usage of fertilizer is a critical step in protecting water resources. When excess nutrients are carried off into storm drains and then nearby waterways, they help to create a substantial growth in algae and other marine plants. When this occurs, the oxygen and pH levels rise significantly, and in turn become harmful to the marine life and the water used for recreation and supply.

Haddonfield residents can contribute to the outdoor fertilizer regulations efforts and goals set forth by the proposed ordinance and the state in a number of ways:

  • Use a non-phosphorus and slow-release nitrogen fertilizer;
  • Do not apply fertilizer before a heavy rainfall or within 25 ft of any body of water;
  • Make sure to use the spreader setting shown on the bag;
  • Return any unused product to the fertilizer bag for future use;
  • If fertilizer falls onto a driveway, road, parking lot, etc. it must be blown or swept back on the lawn.

PLANT A TREE, PROVIDE A REMEMBRANCE WITH HADDONFIELD, NJ’S COMMEMORATIVE TREE PROGRAM
By dedicating a tree planting Haddonfield in honor of a special event or a special person, you can provide a remembrance that is important to you, your family and your community.

The Borough of Haddonfield is pleased to work with individuals interested having a tree in Haddonfield planted and dedicated through their Commemorative Tree Program. For every tree that is dedicated, sponsors may request an engraved brass plaque to be placed near the dedicated tree. This approved plaque is approximately 5 inches by 8 inches and includes commemorative wording as well as the tree’s scientific and common names.

Trees acquired for dedication are approximately 8-12 feet tall or measure 1.5 to 2.5 inches in diameter. Size will depend on the type of tree selected and its availability. The Department of Public Works will acquire, plant and maintain the dedicated tree. Tree types and plating sites will be selected by the Haddonfield Shade Tree Commission in consultation with the Department of Public Works.  This ensures that the sites are appropriate to support the tree, are in locations where plantings are needed by the borough, and that the tree species are consistent with the street trees planted successfully throughout the borough.  All sites are provided on a first come, first served basis, based on a completed application, including payment.

The Following tree sites are available for the 2012 Commemorative Tree Program: 9 Tanner Street (the tree well closest to Kings highway and the tree well further from Kings Highway); 12 Tanner Street; and 23 Tanner Street.

A $1,000 minimum donation is requested to establish a dedicated tree. This covers the cost of acquiring the tree and the commemorative plaque as well as the planting and maintenance cost.

For additional information, and available locations, please contact the Borough of Haddonfield 856-429-4700 or online at www.haddonfieldnj.org.
