Municipal Matters – July 15, 2014

Utility Capital Project Update Grove Street—
The Maple Ave intersection is currently closed while the contractor installs water main and sanitary main in the intersection.  It is anticipated that the intersection will be closed for one more week.  The work will then move to the intersection of Lake St.

2014 Utility and Road Improvements—
Sanitary sewer work began on Mount Vernon.  Temporary paving of trenches will occur each Friday to assist with dust control.

Summer Commissioner Meeting Schedule
The Commissioners meet only one day a month in the months of July and August. The next scheduled meeting date is Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Work Sessions are also scheduled for these dates at 3 p.m.

New Fire Department Appointment
Connor Smith is now a member of the Haddon Fire Company No. 1.

Senior Citizen Commission Introduced
The Commissioners adopted an ordinance to create a Senior Citizen Commission that would provide programs, events, activities and services primarily for the senior citizens of the Borough of Haddonfield. Full details on the purpose and duties of this Commission can be found in the full July 15, 2014 Commissioners Meeting Agenda posted to the Borough website.

Shade Tree Commission
The Commissioners amended the Shade Tree Commission ordinance.  The revision consolidate regulations which were spread out in the Borough code. Complete details of these changes can be found in the July 15, 2014 Agenda posted to the Borough website.

Water and Sewer Facilities Sale and Vote Ordinance Introduced
The Commissioners adopted an ordinance which will require a question to be placed on the ballot in November regarding the possible sale of the Water and Sewer Utility.

The question on the November ballot is proposed to be put forth as follows:

“Shall the Borough of Haddonfield, in the County of Camden, New Jersey, be authorized to sell its water and wastewater utility systems to New Jersey-American Water Company, Inc. for the sum of $28,500,000 (Twenty-Eight Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars)?”

Several additional public informational meetings will be held in the fall prior to the November election providing residents an opportunity to review the facts and ask questions so that they may make an informed decision.  Information concerning the sale can be found on the Borough website.

Upcoming Events 
The Commissioners have granted permission to the following businesses to host an event:

  • Ankokas Region, A.A.C.A – Haddonfield Auto Show on September 20,2014
  • Amixx Boutique – Movie Night on July 31, 2014
  • WYSH – Book Reading & Signing in August (date TBD)

Bid Awards
The Commissioners have awarded bids for the following:

  • Trico Equipment Services, LLC for the purchase of a Backhoe equipment for the Borough of Haddonfield for $78,808.00
  • JAK Construction Corp t/a Diamond Construction for Pot Hole Repairs #2for the Borough of Haddonfield for $22,048.00

Bid Rejected 
The Commissioners have rejected bids for the following:

  • Tree Removal Services due to bids received are over budget.

Annual Sidewalk Sale
The four-day Town wide Sidewalk Sale retail event will take place Thursday, August 7 through Sunday, August 10 and will feature many of Haddonfield’s shops and boutiques setting up along the sidewalks of Downtown Haddonfield for summertime shopping in the sun. Shops on Kings Court and along Kings Highway, Ellis, Mechanic and Tanner Streets, Haddy Lane and North & South Haddon Avenue will offer great sidewalk savings on summer merchandise as well as fall collection previews.

First Thursday, August 7
The Townwide Sidewalk Sale kicks off in a big way on Thursday, August 7 with FirstThursday also taking place this day from 5 – 8 p.m. event, appropriately themed ‘Sidewalk Sale.’ First Thursday extends the fun and entertainment of the Sidewalk Sale event into the evening with an exceptional mix of music, on-street artists, extraordinary dining, and retail specials.

Musical entertainment for August’s First Thursday performing 5 – 8 p.m. includes DJ, Frank Staff, Jazz Quintet, Top Cats and Quartet 33. Artists Row will be held on Tanner Street.

The Downtown will also be offering Customer Appreciation Rewards exclusively during August’s First Thursday. This promotion allows all receipts for purchases made between 5 and 8 p.m. on First Thursday, August 7, to receive a 10% rebate on the total amount of money spent. The rebate is to be given in the form of a Haddonfield Gift Certificate, and all receipts must be redeemed within one week of the event (by August 14 for August First Thursday). The rebate is not to exceed $50 per person.
The Friends of the Library are accepting book donations for their annual September book sale.  Books may be dropped off at the library.

Haddonfield’s Rules for Dog Walking
The Commissioners want to remind residents of the rules regarding walking your dogs and disposing property of their waste:

  • All dogs must be on a leash when being walked on public streets; the Crows Woods Nature Preserve and in any park area; no pet is permitted to roam un-leashed in Haddonfield
  • Pet owners or anyone who takes their pet for walks must properly dispose of their pet’s waste by picking it up, wrapping it and either placing it in the trash or flushing it unwrapped down the toilet.

Residents are reminded to sign up to receive important e-mail notices, reminders, and alerts from the Borough.  This system can be used to alert those who are registered to impending deadlines (for the payment of taxes, pet license fee, etc.), and to public safety situations.
